Independence Day: A time to celebrate and reflect upon- Akash Kumar

It's not just an occasion to celebrate but also to reflect upon where we are headed as a country. As much as it is the moment to take pride in the fact that we have proved Churchill wrong and one of the greatest experiments in the history of democracy has endured, it's also the time to further strengthen the democratic and secular values of our beloved motherland.



In the land of Buddha, a deficit of centrist middle ground is quite evident in politics. Either you are "right" or "left", "with us" or "against us". There is no other way. While the left's lament regarding the freedom of speech and intolerance are heavily exaggerated, the space for dissent in public sphere has shrunk. It's not just the government and the bigoted right wing internet army that is to be blamed, but even the self-proclaimed leftist intellectuals are surprisingly very intolerant to any differences in opinions. Lack-lusture communism is busy finding refuge in caste-based identity politics. The term "secularism" in present Indian context has changed its meaning to suit the vote bank politics which means ignoring the menace of Islamic extremism. On the other end of the political spectrum, bigotry and jingoism have donned on the veil of nationalism. Those against the government are being branded "anti-nationals" in no time. The definition of nationalism has narrowed down to symbolisms of various kinds rather than any material contribution to the nation and its people. The narrow concept of "Nationalism" is a European export to India and was somewhat necessary for our struggle for Independence. But, in spirit we have always been the country of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The world is our family). Ending on an optimistic note, I would like to quote Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore on his vision of India:
"Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake."

Diary of an inquisitive teen- Cricket and Baseball

It has been 5 months since I came to the States and now I feel that I’ll never be back home again, because part of my heart will always be here roaming around in the land of the 5 C’s and the grand hole. Oh, I haven’t visited the Grand Canyon yet. Anyways, it’s on my calendar. I have much on my plate of life to taste giving me a life lesson very often. It comes with the necessity of managing the limited amount of time which is yet another skill needed to succeed.

So, the spring semester in school has started with the chilly mornings and the Mondays everyone hates. I went hiking to the Superstition Mountains when it was snowing over there and it was incredible to touch real snow in my life for the first time probably. Cactus and Snow alongside seem to be a paradox for people; but everything is possible in Arizona.

I just started volunteering at the i.d.e.a. museum and it’s really fun to engage with the kids and learn from them. The “oh-so-happy” moment for me recently was the news of my selection to the Civic Education Workshop at Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. from 22 to 28 this month. This opportunity will provide me with a more profound understanding of the American system of governance and civic participation.

The most amazing thing I am dying to tell you is that we had Lochy from Australia staying with us for two weeks. He was here on an educational travel exchange between Mountain View and his school back home. It was an indelible experience; for our house had become an international conference with delegates from India, Australia and of course, the United States. Lochy went to school with me for a day and everyone there was blown away with the fact that a foreign exchange student was hosting one another one. I had a hard time understanding his accent and quite often, I misunderstood his "A" for "I". Now, let me tell you a fact most Americans don't recognize- Everyone in the world has an accent for some person from another part of the globe.

Being "Australian" and "Indian", we shared a common interest in cricket. Cricket is Australia's national sport. It's India's national pastime just like baseball is of United States. To give you an idea of our love for cricket, it is often referred to as the religion of the Indian subcontinent.  Cricket World Cup, which takes place every four years, is the third most watched TV event after Olympics and FIFA world cup. The 2015 world cup would kickstart soon in the Australian continent. The Indian Cricket Team is defending their champion title this year. Lochy brought me a related souvenir, the official T-shirt of the event.

If you are not at all familiar with Cricket which might be the case, it's a bat-and-ball game like baseball to give you an idea. If you are someone from India reading this, you might not be knowing about baseball. Both have their own unique styles of playing and they share similarities as well quite contrasting differences. Unlike the cute shape of a baseball field which is like a pie ready to be served, cricket grounds are elliptical. The bats in cricket are flat not rounded. I'd encourage you to Google it rather than reading my idiotic amateurish explanation....ha-ha. Bye for now & see you soon right here on our own JeevanMag.com

दिल्ली में "आप" की जीत के निहितार्थ

हालिया दिल्ली चुनावों में आम आदमी पार्टी की जीत भारतीय लोकतंत्र के जीवंतता का सूचक है। अरविन्द केजरीवाल ने एक बार फिर उन सारे राजनीतिक पंडितों को धता बता दिया जो कि लोकसभा चुनावों के बाद "आप" के भविष्य पर प्रश्नचिन्ह खड़े कर रहे थे। ये जीत एक बहुत बड़ी ज़िम्मेदारी है और देखना दिलचस्प रहेगा कि इस अवसर का "आप" किस प्रकार उपयोग करती है। देश के दिल दिल्ली में "आप" की सरकार कुछ हद तक केंद्र में एक विपक्ष की कमी को पूरा करने का कार्य करेगी। आशा है कि ये नतीजे सत्ता के आकंठ में डूबी भाजपा को भी जगाने में सफल होंगे। भाजपा को ये समझ आ जाना चाहिए कि अब "हनीमून" का समय समाप्त हो चला है और ज़रूरी ये है कि राज्यों के चुनावों में मतदाताओं को "मोदी" मन्त्र तथा नकारात्मक प्रचार के बदले ठोस स्थानीय मुद्दे तथा स्थानीय चेहरे पेश किये जाएँ। इन चुनावों ने यह साबित कर दिया है कि मोदी की "भाजपा" अजेय नहीं है पर ऐसा कहना भी ठीक नहीं होगा कि ये नतीजे केंद्र सरकार की कार्यप्रणाली के प्रति आम जनता रोष को प्रदर्शित करते हैं। दिल्ली की जनता के एक बड़े तबके में काफ़ी पहले से ही "केजरीवाल फॉर सीएम, मोदी फॉर पीएम" के स्वर बुलंद थे। इसका प्रतिफल पिछले दिल्ली विधानसभा और लोकसभा चुनावों दोनों में ही देखने को मिला। इस बार भी भाजपा को मिले ३२ प्रतिशत वोट यह दिखाते हैं कि दिल्ली में पार्टी ने भले ही एक बड़ा टुकड़ा ज़रूर खो दिया हो पर पूरी ज़मीन नहीं खोई है। आगामी बिहार चुनावों में भाजपा को चाहिए कि एक साफ़ प्रतिबद्ध चेहरा (जो स्थानीय नेतृत्व में दूर-दूर तक नज़र नहीं आता) सामने रख ज़मीनी सच्चाई के बल पर चुनाव लड़े। अगर आम आदमी पार्टी बिहार के चुनावों में कदम रखती है (हालाँकि आसार नज़र नहीं आते) तो इसके लिए लोकसभा चुनावों से सबक ले ये ध्यान रखना होगा कि दिल्ली और बिहार के सामजिक समीकरणों में ज़मीन-आसमान का फर्क है।

दिल्ली के चुनावी युद्ध में आज आम आदमी पार्टी ने ये साबित कर दिया है कि देश में चुनाव जीतने, सरकार बनाने और बहुमत लाने के लिए जाति-धर्म के अलावा और भी मुद्दे हैं जिनके दम पर मज़बूत सरकार स्थापित की जा सकती है। ये जीत आम आदमी की जीत है। भारतीय  इतिहास में पहली बार ऐसा हो रहा के हमने एक ऐसा चुनाव देखा,जो डंके की चोट पर आम आदमी के आधारभूत मुद्दों पर लड़ा गया, और आज बहुमत से भी बहुत अधिक सीटों से जीता गया।  ये चुनाव उन पार्टियों के लिए एक सन्देश देता है जो कहीं ना कहीं वोट बैंक बढ़ाने के लिए बीच में उन मुद्दों को ले आते हैं जिससे आम आदमी का भला और विकास नहीं हो सकता, जो ना विकास के रास्ते की तरफ से आते हैं और ना ही उस ओर जाते हैं। आज का आम आदमी अपने जीवन में आराम औ' सुकून चाहता है। उसे ज़रुरत है ऐसे मज़बूत तंत्र की जो उसकी आधारभूत ज़रूरतों पानी, बिजली, स्वछता, स्वास्थय, परिवहन सुविधाएं, सुरक्षा आदि की पूर्ति कर सके।

आंकड़े बताते हैं कि दिल्ली में बहुत बड़ी संख्या में ऐसी आबादी है जिसकी आधारभूत ज़रूरतें खस्ताहाल हैं। लोग अनधिकृत कॉलोनी और झुग्गी झोपड़ियों में रहने को मजबूर हैं। छोटे तबके के गरीब लोग, फैक्ट्रियों में मज़दूरी करने वाले, सड़कों पर रिक्शा तथा ऑटो, छोटी-मोटी दुकान चलाकर किसी तरह अपनी ज़िंदगी गुजार रहे बाहर से आये हुए लोगों की ज़िन्दगी के तमाम सपने आज भी अधूरे हैं। आधारभूत ज़रूरतों का ख़र्च बढ़  गया है, लेकिन हालात वैसे के वैसे ही हैं। आज दिल्ली की कुल आबादी का 40 % हिस्सा प्रवासी लोगों का है, जिनमे से अधिकतर लोग  गरीबी, बेरोज़गारी, तंगहाली से परेशान होकर देश के दिल दिल्ली में अपने दिल में बसी बहुत सी आशाओं के साथ आते हैं। दिल्ली एक ऐसा राज्य है जहाँ आज देश के हर हिस्से का आम आदमी बसा हुआ है और यहाँ की चुनावी जीत से देश के हर हिस्से में बहुत प्रभावी सन्देश पहुंचेगा , आम आदमी पार्टी  दो राष्ट्रीय पार्टी "बीजेपी" और "कांग्रेस" को ज़ोरदार टक्कर देने  के बाद यह देश के दूसरे राज्यों में होने वाले चुनावों में बहुत प्रभावी ढंग से खुद को पेश कर सकती है।

कांग्रेस डूबती हुई नौका है जिसमे अब कोई भी नही बैठना चाहता, उसके अपने सवार ही उसे छोड़ कर भाग रहे हैं। यह कांग्रेस के लिए बड़ी चिंता का विषय है और अब कांग्रेस को वोट बैंक नहीं बल्कि अपने अस्तित्व को बचाने के लिए लड़ना होगा। यह बीजेपी के लिए भी बहुत बड़ा झटका इसलिए है क्योंकि इस बार चुनाव में ना मोदी मंत्र चला ना मोदी तंत्र, ज़ाहिर है कि लोकसभा चुनाव में ज़बरदस्त जीत हासिल करने वाली बीजेपी के दांत खट्टे पड़ चुके हैं, और इस हार से बीजेपी के आत्मविश्वास को बहुत गहरी चोट पहुंची है। एक सबसे ख़ास बात यह देखने को मिली कि प्रधानमन्त्री मोदी ऐसे पहले व्यक्ति हैं जिन्होनें दिल्ली के भावी मुख्यमंत्री केजरीवाल को उनकी जीत पर सबसे पहले बंधाई दी।  इसे मोदी जी का बड़प्पन समझा जाए या फिर यूँ समझें के वो खिसिया से गए हैं।  चुनाव प्रचार के दरम्यान "आप"  प्रतिद्वंद्वी प्रधानमन्त्री मोदी द्वारा दी गई इस बंधाई से साबित है वह देश का विकास चाहते हैं चाहे सत्ता में कोई भी सरकार हो और "पांच साल केजरीवाल" मंत्र से लोगों को बहुत उम्मीदें हैं और लोगों द्वारा इसके जाप ने अपना असर दिखा ही दिया है अब तो दिल्ली के लोग बदलाव देखना चाहते हैं । केजरीवाल अब उन क्षेत्रीय पार्टियों के लिए खतरे की घंटी है , जिन्होंने आम आदमी को अब तक  बेवक़ूफ़ समझ रखा है।

आज दिल्ली के चुनावी नतीजे देख कर दुनिया हैरान है और इन परिस्तिथियों में मुझे अपनी ग़ज़ल का एक शेर याद आता है...

उम्मीद क्या थी क्या से क्या अंजाम हो गया
दिल आज फिर ये इश्क़ में नाकाम हो गया

लोगों में उत्साह है, नई उम्मीदों के साथ अब लोगों को देश के दिल दिल्ली में नए जज़्बातों के साथ सुनहरा भविष्य नज़र आ रहा है। आज दिल्ली की जनता ने साबित कर दिया है कि लोकतंत्र में कोई अजेय नहीं होता, ज़्यादा घमंड और अति आत्मविश्वास , पार्टी हो या व्यक्ति सबको ही ले डूबता है। मैं मानता हूँ कि दो करोड़ की आबादी वाले इस शहर दिल्ली में लोगों के पास समय का अभाव है। फिर भी जनता ने अपने समय और वोट का भरपूर प्रयोग किया है। देश की राजधानी दिल्ली को आज छोटा भारत कहा जाता है और इस छोटे भारत से बड़े भारत को अब बड़ी उम्मीदें हो चली हैं।

Secularism: The very spirit of India

I am Akash Kumar from India currently in the United States on KL-YES (Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange and Study) program sponsored by the Department of State. In context to the International Education Week (November 17-21, 2014), we would be discussing the religions and the secular nature of India.

Coming from India- a country so rich and diverse in terms of culture instills in me a sense of sheer joy and pride. India boasts of a history several millennia old which helped shape its diverse culture. Four world religions- Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, have their roots in India. Buddhism and Jainism originated in the medieval period as modified forms of Hinduism. Sikhism came with the concept of universal brotherhood. Islam, Christianity and Zoroastrianism came to India in the first millennium CE. Secularism is at the heart of India. The Rigveda, a sacred text for Hindus and probably the oldest book in the history of mankind says: "Truth is one. God is one. But the sages refer to it in many ways. Our paths might be different, the destination is the same." Similar is the essence of Qur'an: "To you your religion and to me mine". India is an example to behold for the people who believe that religion comes with extremism. Despite the fact that people are highly religious, India not only by law but by its very nature is a secular nation.The banks of Holy River Ganga and Yamuna are testimony to our Indo-Islamic culture which is a perfect blend of the goodness of Hinduism and Islam. Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World is a perfect example of the Indo-Islamic architecture which blossomed with the intermingling of the cultures. Hindus join Muslims in Eid celebration and Muslims are ahead in savoring the joy of Diwali- that's the very Indian spirit. Christians make around 2% of the total population but Christmas is a public holiday. My town has just around 200 Christians out of its total population of 200,000. But, you'll have trouble finding empty space in the Churches on Christmas with people from all religions coming to light candles and celebrate the very joy.

A common identity for all- INDIAN

Religious diversity, co-existence and religious tolerance are both established in the country by the law and custom. And yes, it's not just tolerance, we are a step ahead with acceptance of each others' religious practices.

3 Months in the United States! Life is beautiful, and busy! My experience so far has given me memories to cherish and lessons to remember. When I return to India, next June, I’ll be a changed individual; changed for better and changed to confront each and every situation life has to offer.

I met my host family on August 15 (India’s Independence Day, metaphorically). To my utter delight, I now think that I couldn’t have got a more cooperative and supportive family. The disorganized person fled out of the chaos and started to plan everything ahead of time. It’s just incredible!

So, I had got the passport to the Toro Nation (Toro-or bull is my school’s mascot) and was ready to be a skinny Toro (I admit I am skinny). I started at Mountain View High School on August 18. On the very first day, I learned the fact that American High Schools are way different from their Indian counterparts. In India, students sit in the classroom and teachers walk in and out while here it’s just the opposite. Schools in India require the students to be dressed up in school uniforms- from tie to shoes. Students aren’t permitted to carry electronic devices like cellphones and yes, we don’t use calculators in our Math class (Maths in British English but Math in American English…a small but significant difference). The public display of affection between opposite sexes is nearly forbidden.

My first days at the school were difficult! I had to adapt to a range of situations. Socializing was tough as every hour here has different classmates. Some of the classes were way too easy. So, I changed my schedule in a week. American History easily became my favorite core class. Among the other classes I have are AP Chemistry, Pre-Calculus, American Literature, Yearbook and Model United Nations. Model UN is super fun! Oh…I forgot to mention that I am just coming from Bruin MUN at UCLA (November 8-9) where I won Honorable mention award representing the Singaporean delegation.

So, now was the time for clubs. I joined Mosaic writing club given my passion for writing. You won’t believe it but I was elected the president of my school’s European culture club despite of not knowing any European language (Don’t be silly by considering English one).

Let me tell you about some ridiculous questions I was asked.

A random guy at school: Do you guys travel on horses and elephants in India?

Me: Hmm…yes, and our traffic police moves on camels!

Guy: Really?

Me (laughing): Get yourself out of the bubble, dude! US is not the only place in the worlds with cars.

I was also asked why I was a vegetarian and if “Facebook” was there in India or not. Some people also misunderstood Swastika (A Hindu religious symbol meaning peace) on my shirt for the Nazi sign which looks similar. I am having a great time capturing these awesome reactions in the hard drive of my memories.

I felt homesick at just one occasion- India was celebrating Diwali- the festival of lights and I had to content myself by skyping with my family. But, Halloween was fantastic! Dressed as a jail breaker with a mouthful of candies, I enjoyed carving pumpkin and creating an artificial graveyard.

यादों की बारिश- लोकआस्था का महापर्व छठ

पूरब से उदित होता तथा पश्चिम में अस्तांचल पर सूर्य…ये प्रकृति के सबसे सुन्दर, सुलभ तथा मनोहारी दृश्य हैं। घटित तो ये प्रतिदिन होने हैं पर आज के मशीनी मानव की फ्लॉपी डिस्क में इन लम्हों के लिए शायद ही कोई जगह हो। 

सूर्योपासना का अनुपम लोकपर्व छठ बस एक कर्मकांड या रीति-रिवाज़ भर नहीं है, यह तो प्रकृति से अपने जुड़ाव पर पुनर्विचार करने का पावन अवसर है। यह अवसर है जीवन के उस शाश्वत सत्य को समझने का कि जैसे प्रकृति में उषा और प्रत्युषा के बीच संतुलन बना रहता है वैसे ही जीवन में सुख-दुःख तो लगे रहते हैं- मानव का तो काम है बस सुखभरे पलों का आनंद ले, दुखभरे पलों को विस्मृत कर सदा गतिमान बने रहना। ठहराव प्रकृति का स्वभाव नहीं… भला नदी भी कहीं रूकती है क्या?

बिहार, नेपाल तथा पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश में मनाया जानेवाला यह त्यौहार भले ही आंचलिक क्यों न हो, इसकी जड़ें मानव इतिहास के प्रथम ग्रन्थ वेदों में निहित हैं। षष्ठी तिथि खगोल-विज्ञान के दृष्टिकोण से भी महत्वपूर्ण है। छठ पर्व पूर्णतया वैदिक तथा वैज्ञानिक है। 

अमिनेष जी के भेजे गये ये सजीव चित्र जाने-अनजाने में जेहन में पूर्व की स्मृतियों का कोलाज़ तैयार कर रहे हैं।  दिमाग फ्लैशबैक में जा रहा है और याद आ रही हैं वो छोटी-छोटी मीठी-मीठी बातें … साल के बाकी दिनों में कचरे से भरा रहने वाला वो छठ घाट जो हर साल बस इस महापर्व के आगमन की बाट जोहता रहता है.…कि कब छठ आये और उसकी सफाई हो। फलप्राप्ति की आस में धरती पर लेटकर दंड देते छठ घाट पहुँचते लोग।  माथे पर दउरा उठाये आते पुरुष तथा उसके पीछे नाक तक सिंदूर का आवरण किये महिलाएं। प्रशासन के लाख मन करने के बावज़ूद पटाखों का जमकर लुत्फ़ उठाते हम बच्चे। लाउडस्पीकर पर अनवरत जारी छठ के लोकगीत। और हाँ, हाथ जोड़े कमर तक पानी में खड़े श्रद्धालु .... अविस्मरणीय।

आज  सात समंदर पार बैठकर भी ये चीज़ें याद आ रही हैं। कुछ नहीं, बस अंदर बैठे मानव की अनुभूत चेतना है। सोचता हूँ क्या हमारी पीढ़ी इस अद्वितीय परंपरा के संरक्षण तथा निर्वहन की भूमिका भली-भांति निभा पाएगी?

Life is standing at a critical turn and the reminiscent of ‘The road not taken’ by Robert Frost dawns on me.

“Two Roads diverged in the yellow wood  

  And I- I chose the one less traveled by.”

Well, as a matter of fact, I don’t know if it’s going to make a big difference in my life or not. But, good or bad, it’s going to be an experience. This year is not just going to be a year, but “my life in a year”. I have done something off-track and I am proud of it.

At the time when my inner fire was going out, this opportunity came to rescue and the fire inside this creative cat was rekindled even at a greater pace. I was chosen as the youth ambassador of India to the United States on YES program sponsored by the Department. Thanks to AFS (the recruitment and placement organization) & YES, now I really know where my passion really lies.

AFS Gateway Orientation at New Delhi

We (The group of 33 individuals accompanied by our ever-charming AFS Coordinator Sonam Mam) are all set to bid a goodbye to India- our beloved motherland, “the cradle of human civilization” in the words of Mark Twain. The bus is waiting and here I am, diving in the thoughts which seem to traverse the infinite. “Hmmm….Sweets! Sweets!” Having sweets before a travel is a sign of good omen in the mystically beautiful Indian tradition. In no time, we are at the airport. Separation brings love at times- the whole set of my mates turning nationalist at the instant and shouting “Vande Matram” (Mother India, I salute to thee) at the top of their voices is a live testimonial of the saying. 

The best wishes from the AFS team is instilling a sense of responsibility & after a while’s wait, the United Airlines UA083 flight takes off to the voyage of our dreams from the New Delhi airport to land the next morning (even 16 hours journey is just a night’s journey because of the huge time difference) at the Newark airport in New Jersey.

It has been about a month and a half since I came here. There was a lot to do & despite of the heart’s urge to jot down the memoirs has proved to be futile. But, I assure myself that I’ll maintain my journal from now on. A large amount of water has flown in the Ganges (or Mississippi) during this period & nearly the same amount of events have taken place in my life. So where was I? Yes, We reached Newark & than to Washington DC by bus. The journey which started from the capital of the largest democracy in the world has ended in the capital of the oldest modern democracy of the world. There is a solid reason behind the use of “modern” while referring to the US as the oldest democracy. The reason is that even Democracy is an Indian brainchild. The oldest democracy - the Vaishali republic, again in India & not far from my house. dates back to the sixth century BC. In this column, I’d try to give you a rough comparison & contrast of the American & Indian society and culture. 

So, yes, I was in Washington DC & there we had had a huge gathering of student ambassadors from several countries assembled at the Hilton hotel & ready to represent their country & culture in the US society. Meeting such wonderful people from across the globe was fun. It was really a huge opportunity to learn from each others culture & discovering some astonishing facts. 

I even met some girls of Indian origin who were representing South Africa. Their forefathers had left home in the colonial period to work on African farms or so. Exchanging the currency with one of those girls was really unforgettable. The Indian Rupee with Gandhi over it & the South African Rand with Mandela over it- we exchanged the tradition of the great souls who showed the world a peaceful way of demonstrating anger & protest, non-violence- appealing directly to the conscience of the adversary. 

The food at Hilton the first day- all the Indians were terrified. “Is it what we are going to eat the whole year? God forbid!” But the second day came with a culinary advantage. One of the Indian cooks of the hotel (Indians are spread everywhere on the planet!) cooked Indian food & he cooked it terribly well. The appetite of each one of us got inflated in an instant & we had a big, big feast. So, that was Washington DC. 

On August 14, I flew to Phoenix only to have another orientation program. So, orientation after orientation from Delhi to DC and now in Phoenix but believe me I was never sick of them because of the charming AFSers. But What I waited for was a meet with my host family, the people with whom I was going to spend my next 10 golden months. The Phoenix orientation was yet another lesson meeting guys and girls from the Scandinavian countries with broader mindsets & a huge rift in personality, thoughts & opinions. But what I remembered was the golden mantra of Intercultural learning “No two cultures are better or worse, they are just different.” The excitement hit the climax when I finally met a girl from Pakistan, India’s neighbor as well as undeclared & “so-called” arch-rival. We were the only ones who could talk in the same language & we talked a lot on the perceptions of people in our countries. It was August 15, the independence day of India & all the exchange students from different parts of the world celebrated it for me. It was a moment of sheer joy & pride undoubtedly. I’ll resume from my experience here in Mesa in the next column.

                             

Wait, let me cover two big international headlines which have something to do with India. So, the first thing is that India became the first nation to succeed in its maiden voyage to Mars! Indian Space Agency- ISRO's Mars Orbiter Mission Mangalyaan created history marking India as one of the space- superpowers! It took just one-tenth money of a common mars probe & is even cheaper than the budget of Hollywood movie 'Gravity'! India thus joined the elite club of 3 other space entities, USA, Russia & European Union to have a mars mission! 

The second news is of a man once denied US Visa getting a rock star reception at the Madison Square Garden, New York as 18000 Indian-Americans poured their heart out for welcoming ‪Indian Prime Minister‎ Narendra Modi in America! More than 30 US lawmakers were testimony to the pomp & show of the occasion. He also addressed around 60000 American youth at the central park with Hugh Jackman! He met with president Obama at the white house and both the leaders talked about global issues & even wrote a joint article for The Washington Post.The upcoming years are likely to envisage growing Indo-US ties.

It took just one-tenth money of a common mars probe & is even cheaper than the budget of Hollywood movie 'Gravity'! ISRO joins the elite group of 3 other space agencies (NASA, RFSA & ESA) to have a mars mission! Now, we can proudly say that China is nowhere in the space race with us. All thanks to the scientists at ISRO - Indian Space Research Organisation!!! A moment of pride for every Indian! & rejoice for every human!

बधाई हो भारत- गर्व है की हम भारतीय हैं
आज के दिन को आने वाली सदियाँ हमेशा याद रखेंगी, यह ऐतिहासिक दिन है। हम भाग्यशाली हैं कि हमने अपनी आँखों से इतिहास को बनते देखा है। आज फिर एक बार हम सब भारतवासियों को अपने भारतीय होने पर गर्व महसूस हो रहा हैं। भारत के अंतरिक्ष कार्यक्रम में एक नया मोड़ आया है। हमारे वैज्ञानिकों ने साबित कर दिया कि वो दुनिया में किसी से पीछे नहीं है। भारत दुनिया का पहला ऐसा देश बन गया है जिसने पहली ही बार में इतनी बड़ी सफलता हासिल कर ली। शब्द कम पड़ रहे हैं इसरो के वैज्ञानिकों की तारीफ़ करने के लिए। भारत का मार्स ऑर्बिटर मिशन (MOM) नामक प्रोग्राम पैसठ करोड़ किलोमीटर (650000000 km ) की अपनी अंतरिक्ष यात्रा को पूरा कर के आज मंगल ग्रह की कक्षा में पहुंच गया। सबसे ख़ास बात यह है कि मात्र 74 मिलियन डॉलर्स (लगभग 4514777000 रुपए) के खर्च में भारत ने इस मिशन को पूरा किया जो औरों की तुलना में बहोत कम है। इस महान कीर्तिमान पर अटल जी का नारा याद आता है- जय जवान , जय किसान, जय विज्ञान।

भारतीय अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी, इसरो का उपग्रह मंगलयान मंगल ग्रह की अंडाकार कक्षा में सफलतापूर्वक प्रवेश कर चुका है. ये भारत के अंतरिक्ष शोध में एक कालजयी घटना है. इस अभियान की कामयाबी से भारत ऐसा देश बन गया है जिसने एक ही प्रयास में अपना अभियान पूरा कर लिया. भारत के मंगल अभियान का निर्णायक चरण 24 सितंबर को सुबह यान को धीमा करने के साथ ही शुरू हो गया था.
इस मिशन की सफलता इन्हीं 24 मिनटों पर निर्भर थी, जिस दौरान यान में मौजूद इंजिन को चालू किया गया.इस ऐतिहासिक घटना का गवाह बनने के लिए भारतीय प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी बैंगलोर के इसरो केंद्र में मौजूद रहे.
इसरो के वैज्ञानिकों को बधाई देते हुए कहा, " आज इतिहास बना है. हमने लगभग असंभव कर दिखाया है. मैं सभी भारतीयों और इसरो वैज्ञानिकों को मुबारक देता हूं. कम साधनों के बावजूद ये कामयाबी वैज्ञानिकों के पुरुषार्थ के कारण मिली है."

मंगलयान से भारत को क्या फायदा होगा ?
 
मंगल की कक्षा में स्थापित हो जाने के बाद मंगलयान इसके वायुमंडल, खनिजों और संरचना की रिपोर्ट वापस भेजेगा. मंगलयान के साथ पांच उपकरण भेजे गए हैं जो वहां से जांच कर संकेत भेजेंगे. इन उपकरणों का कुल भार 15 किलो है.

1. मीथेन सेंसर - यह मंगल के वातावरण में मीथेन गैस की मात्रा को मापेगा. कहां से मीथेन आ रही है इसका स्रोत भी पता करेगा.

2. थर्मल इंफ्रारेड स्पेक्ट्रोमीटर- यह मंगल की सतह का तापमान पता करेगा. साथ ही तापमान के निकलने का स्रोत पता करेगा. जिससे मंगल के सतह की संरचना और वहां मौजूद खनिज के बारे में पता चलेगा.

3. मार्स कलर कैमरा जो मंगल के फोटो खींच कर भेजेगा.

4. लमेन अल्फा फोटोमीटर - यह मंगल के ऊपरी वातावरण में ड्यूटीरियम तथा हाइड्रोजन की मात्रा मापेगा.

5. मंगल इक्सोस्फेरिक न्यूट्रल संरचना विश्लेषक (MENCA) - यह बाहरी हिस्से में जो कण मिलेगें उसकी जांच करेगा

मंगल के वैज्ञानिक अध्ययन के अलावा यह मिशन इसलिए भी अहम है, क्योंकि यह भारत के लिए दूसरे ग्रहों की जांच करने के सफल अभियानों की शुरुआत करेगा.
